Treasure: Day 30 NaPoWriMo

Writing prompt: Write a minimalist poem that is quite short, and that doesn’t really try to tell a story, but to quickly and simply capture an image or emotion. Haiku are probably the most familiar and traditional form of minimalist poetry.
Treasure

Like a precious gem,
Family is a treasure
To be held and loved.

Poetry Homework: Day 28 NaPoWriMo

Writing prompt: Write a meta-poem, a poem about poems.

Poetry Homework

Sometimes they’re happy,
Sometimes they’re sad.
They can be funny
Silly or mad.

The possibilities
Are so endless,
But I think some poems
Can sound senseless.

I wish this homework
Would make sense to me now,
I have to write a poem
And don’t know how!

I Wonder Why: Day 26 NaPoWriMo

Writing prompt: Write a poem that uses repetition. Many forms of poetry expressly require or rely on repetition – for example, the villanelle or pantoum.

I Wonder Why

I feel nervous when I go to school.
I am introverted and shy.
The problem is I’m just not cool,
As I so often wonder why.

I am introverted and shy,
And the best pretender you’ll ever see.
But sometimes I wonder why
My friends don’t actually know me.

*I chose to write a pantoum poem today. This is a basic pantoum which consists of two quatrains using an “ab,ab” rhyme scheme. Each line usually has between 8-12 syllables.

The most interesting thing about the pantoum form of poetry is that the second line of the first stanza is repeated in the first line of the second stanza, and the fourth line of the first stanza is repeated in the third line of the second stanza.

Adventurous Tale: Day 24 NaPoWriMo

Writing prompt: Write a poem that is inspired by a reference book. Locate a dictionary, thesaurus, or encyclopedia, open it at random, and consider the two pages in front of you to be your inspirational playground for the day.
* I chose to write about two common pairs of synonyms for today’s poem.

Adventurous Tale

A ship is a vessel
A great big thing
A boat is smaller,
Or so it seems.

Stories can be
Special or ordinary,
Tales are exciting
Wild, extraordinary!

I read a great story,
An adventurous tale
About a boat
A man, and a whale.
